Exploring inclusive practice through collaborative drawing

Holly Mills, ran a workshop entitled ‘Exploring inclusive practice through collaborative drawing’ at the Association of Architectural Educator’s Forum, which provided an opportunity for academics to discuss and debate inclusive practice within architectural education.

Holly began by presenting the work she had undertaken with Jessica Payne, a final year Bachelor of Architecture student at NTU (now graduate), who had received the TILT (Trent Institute for teaching and learning) student-staff co-creation fund.  The partnership was critical as it enabled the study to be student focused and more inclusive. Mills and Payne explored collaborative drawing, as a community of practice to improve a sense of belonging, whilst tackling issues related to confidence, perfectionism, productivity, and wellbeing.

Following the presentation, the architectural educators were invited to create a collaborative drawing.  They drew together standing up, on one long piece of paper, moving around the table.  To begin with the academics were very quiet focusing on drawing and then they began to chat to one another, getting louder and louder. Some of the participants commented on how relaxing and therapeutic it was and that it was a good well being activity.
